Scholarships

The University of Tokyo provides international students with access to a number of financial aid options that cover various forms and purposes, including school expense exemptions, scholarships, emergency loans, and student discounts.

The Graduate School of Science has established a new scholarship called the "Graduate School of Science (GSS) Scholarship for International Students," which provides financial support to international students for a total of five years starting from the enrollment in a master's degree course to the end of a three-year Ph.D. course.

The following are the scholarships available at the Graduate School of Science. If you have further questions about the scholarships, please contact the International Liaison Office.

Scholarships for Prospective Students

1) Graduate School of Science Scholarship for International Students

This scholarship provides a monthly stipend of 150,000 yen to self-supporting international students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, with the aim of increasing the number of international students.

2) International Student Special Scholarship Program
(The University of Tokyo Fellowship)

This scholarship provides a monthly stipend of 200,000 yen to self-supporting international student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and first come to Japan to pursue a Ph.D. degree at the School for the October entrance.

3) Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship

By Embassy Recommendation (contact office: Embassy or Consulate of Japan in your home country)
The application for this Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) scholarship is to be made in your home country.
The Embassy or Consulate of Japan in your home country is responsible for this scholarship, and there are different requirements and policies according to each country. Please note that the University of Tokyo DOES NOT provide any details about the application procedure, which is independent of the university. Please inquire directly at the appropriate contact office in your country.
The scholarship covers the monthly stipend as well as the return airfare. You can also take an intensive Japanese course for the first six months after arrival, if required, under the scholarship.
This scholarship is highly recommended.
By University Recommendation (General)
Application is to be made in your home country.
The applicant needs a strong recommendation from a professor of the University of Tokyo for the Japanese government's screening. Most applicants are selected on the basis of an academic exchange agreement with the applicant's overseas university.
The scholarship covers the monthly stipend as well as the return airfare. You can also take an intensive Japanese course for the first six months after arrival, if required.
The application period is from December to January.
By University Recommendation (Special)
This scholarship is available for applicants who first come to Japan to pursue a Master's/Ph.D. degree for the October entrance.
By application within Japan
After enrollment at the University of Tokyo, students may apply for the MEXT scholarship; however, recipients are limited to one student from the Graduate School of Science.
The application period is around October.
Monthly stipend
Graduate students: 145,000 yen (Ph.D. program), 144,000 yen (Master's program), 143,000 yen (Research Student)
Undergraduate students: 117,000 yen
Additional: 3,000 yen/month (for students at the Hongo, Komaba, Mitaka, Shirogane campuses); 2,000 yen/month (for students at the Kashiwa, Wako, Tsukuba campuses)

4) Private Scholarships

Monthly stipend:
50,000 - 150,000 yen

Information is available at the International Liaison Office. There are about 15 foundations providing scholarships.
By university recommendation
Application is made after enrollment.
There are about 45 foundations, which set widely varying application requirements according to age, major, and so on. The applicants will be screened by the University of Tokyo in the first stage, and the screening is very competitive.
These scholarships are only for international students who are enrolled at the School of Science of the University of Tokyo. A certain level of Japanese language ability is necessary to apply for private scholarships. 1) JASSO Scholarship

Applications are accepted every April.

Students enrolled at the University of Tokyo (including research students) are eligible.
