Special Auditor

Admission guidelines for becoming a Special Auditor (“Tokubetsu Chokou Gakusei”) for 2024

Applicant Qualifications

A graduate student enrolled in a university which is allowed to exchange students with the Graduate School of Science at the University of Tokyo in accordance with an Agreement on Academic Exchange for Cooperation with the University of Tokyo or with its Graduate School of Science.

Application procedure

  1. Application period:
    • For applicants wishing to enroll in April 2024: From November 10, 2023 to November 30, 2023
    • For applicants wishing to enroll in October 2024: From May 10, 2024 to May 31, 2024

  3. Application Documents:
    • Application form for admission as a Special Auditor (prescribed by the School of Science)
    • Student registration certificate for home university (Japanese or English translation must be attached.)
    • Transcripts of academic records issued by home university or college attended (Japanese or English translation must be attached.)
    • Proof of your prior consultation with the prospective professors who are in charge of courses you wish to take such as e-mail correspondence

Selection Procedure

The selection of applicants will be made by examining the application documents. However, applicants are required to obtain the approval of the prospective professor(s)

Selection results and Course registration

  1. Notification of results
    • Applicants will be notified of the results by e-mail around the following times:
      • The end of December 2023 for applicants wishing to enroll in April 2024
      • The end of June 2024 for applicants wishing to enroll in October 2024
  2. Course registration
    • Applicants permitted to enroll must register for courses as specified in the information sent with the selection results. If the enrollment is not completed within the specified period, the applicant will not be allowed to attend any courses.

Notes

  1. You will receive proof of accredited courses taken at the School of Science during your period as a Special Auditor.
  2. The period of enrollment for Special Auditors is for one year at maximum. Application for extension is possible. The total period as a Special Auditor is limited to 3 years.
  3. Registration for undergraduate courses is not permitted as a rule, although if the department permits, you may take undergraduate courses allowing UTokyo graduate-student enrollments. The same regulations apply to courses offered at other graduate schools.
  4. Students with a status of Special Auditor must register for minimum of 10 hours of classes per week during a semester. Japanese immigration law stipulates that international students with “student” visa spend a minimum of ten hours in class per week.
  5. Fees for Special Auditors :
    • There are no application or admission fees for Special Auditors.
    • Tuition fee: 14,800 yen per credit
      (Tuition fee = 14,800 yen × total number of credits)
      Note: The tuition fee is subject to change.

    If you are a student enrolled in a university with which the University of Tokyo has a tuition fee waiver agreement, you are not required to pay the tuition fee.
