Professor Shinji Tsuneyuki won the 21st Honda Frontier Award in 2024.

Professor Shinji Tsuneyuki of the Department of Physics, Graduate School of Science, has received the 21st Honda Frontier Award for 2024. We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to him.

The subject of this year's award is his research on "Development of a method for non-empirical prediction of material structure and anharmonic phonon and electronicproperties." First-principles calculations are a simulation method that predicts the electronic structure and physical properties of materials based on the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, without using empirical parameters or experimental data. However, various issues still need to be solved in first-principles calculations regarding their accuracy and computational complexity. Professor Tsuneyuki has developed various novel methods and opened up the frontiers of materials science and materials science in predicting physical properties, structure exploration, materials exploration, and device design. The novel methods range from an anharmonic phonon analysis method to accurately evaluate thermophysical properties such as thermal conductivity and thermal expansion, a data assimilation method that dramatically accelerates the prediction of crystal structures of materials from their chemical compositions by combining experimental data with simulations, world's first calculation of superconducting transition temperature of hydrogen sulfide using superconducting density functional theory, ab initio calculation method for solids based on the transcorrelated method, a correlated wavefunction theory, which is entirely different from the current mainstream density functional theory, etc.
