Dr. Masaki Kashiwara, Department of Mathematics, The University of Tokyo, has received the internationally prestigious Abel Prize.

Dr. Masaki Kashiwara, Project Professor at the Institute for Mathematical Analysis and a Research Fellow at the School of Mathematics, Kyoto University, has been awarded the 2025 Abel Prize for his work in algebraic analysis and representation theory.

Professor Kashiwara studied under Professor Mikio Sato at The University of Tokyo, and in his master's thesis developed the theory of D-modules, a fundamental tool in algebraic analysis. His subsequent achievements are so numerous that it is impossible to describe them all here, but to name a few, he established the Riemann--Hilbert correspondence, solved the Kazhdan--Lusztig conjecture (joint work with Brylinski; Beilinson--Bernstein also solved it independently), and the introduction of a crystalline basis for quantum groups, and the foundation of the micro-local sheaf theory (joint work with Schapira). The innovative tools and ideas in these studies are indispensable not only for algebraic analysis and representation theory, but also for the whole of current mathematics. In recent years, He has been working on applications of the micro-local sheaf theory to symplectic geometry (joint work with Guillermou and Schapira), the Riemann--Hilbert correspondence of irregular singular types (joint work with D'Agnolo), monoidal category in cluster algebras (joint work with Kang, Kim, Oh, and Park).

We would like to congratulate him on receiving this award and wish him continued success in his future endeavors.
