University Professor Eiichi Nakamura Elected Fellow of the Royal Society

University Professor Eiichi Nakamura

Professor Eiichi Nakamura, University Professor of the University of Tokyo, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society as of May 13, 2025. Founded in 1660, the Royal Society is one of the most historic and prestigious academic institutions in the world. Over the centuries, it has counted among its Fellows some of the most eminent figures in the history of science, including Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, and Albert Einstein.

Each year, up to 52 scientists from the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, and up to 10 from outside the UK, are elected as Fellows in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the advancement of natural knowledge across disciplines including mathematics, medicine, and the natural sciences. Professor Nakamura was previously elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009, and earlier this year was named an Honorary Member of the Chinese Chemical Society.

Professor Nakamura has advanced the frontiers of organic chemistry through interdisciplinary research that extends into materials science and nanoscience, achieving remarkable outcomes in these fields. Over the past two decades, he has realized a long-standing aspiration in chemistry by employing high-speed, high-resolution electron microscopy to record and analyze a wide range of chemical phenomena—spanning organic, inorganic, and materials chemistry—at the level of single atoms and molecules.

Note: As of this year, the distinction between UK-based and non-UK-based scientists has been discontinued. All newly elected individuals now hold the unified title of “Fellow of the Royal Society.”
