海底下生命圏
海底堆積物わずか数mg中には、夜空に輝く天体に匹敵するほどの生命が存在している。緑と赤の点一つ一つは、海底下に潜む微生物を特殊な方法で染色し、蛍光顕微鏡で観察したものである。これらほとんどが性状未知であるが、所々に存在する微生物集合体はメタンをエネルギー源として生育すると考えられている。
