Associate Professor Naoto Yokoya received the 2024 Young Scientist Award from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology

Associate Professor Naoto Yokoya

Associate Professor Naoto Yokoya has received the 2024 Young Scientist Award from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for his research on "Multi-dimensional high-resolution satellite image analysis based on data fusion."

Inductive approaches such as machine learning are effective for acquiring knowledge from big data of earth observation, but incompleteness of observation data and lack of training data are major issues. Associate Professor Naoto Yokoya has developed a data fusion technique that enables us to understand detailed characteristics and changes on the earth's surface that cannot be obtained with a single sensor by integrating and analyzing image data obtained from multiple satellites with different onboard sensors. By combining knowledge of physical phenomena with mathematical optimization and machine learning, this technology overcomes the problem of insufficient training data and realizes satellite image analysis that exceeds the temporal, spatial, and wavelength resolution limits of existing technologies.

The results of this research are expected to be useful for disaster monitoring and environmental assessment, and to contribute to solving social issues.
