Current Research

Plants experience a highly variable light environment over the course of both the day and the year. This is especially true in plants in natural canopies, which experience a highly variable light environment over the course of the day due to changes in leaf angle, cloud cover, and shading by other plants. Plants exhibit physiological responses to various environmental stresses by acclimating and/or adjust to the stress. Our research aims to clarify the mechanisms of photosynthetic acclimation to various environments comprehensively, and to improve photosynthetic capacity under abiotic stress, using a variety of plant species and mutants (Arabidopsis, rice, tobacco, etc). Recently, research directed toward the development of novel plant cultivation techniques in plant factories has been examined, based on our understanding of plant responses to the environment.
