The University of Tokyo Faculty Position in Earth and Planetary Science

The Department of Earth and Planetary Science of the University of Tokyo is seeking to fill a vacancy at the level of Professor or Associate Professor. This position is open to researchers with expertise in any fields of Earth and Planetary Science. The successful candidate will also be committed to the new educational system offered in English, provided by the Global Standard Science Education Division of Graduate School of Science. Strong preference will be given to candidates who have considerable educational and/or research experience in non-Japanese work environments. 2. Fields of expertise
Any field in the broad area of Earth and Planetary Science, including Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, Space and Planetary Science, Earth and Planetary System Science, Solid Earth Science, and Geosphere and Biosphere Science
3. Requirements
  • Ph.D. or an equivalent qualification
  • Track record of internationally recognized research results and proven ability to develop research and educational programs in the fields mentioned above.
4. Date of commencement of employment
As early as possible after decision is made
5. Term of employment
  • Fixed term, five years from the date of appointment
  • There is possibility of reappointment. However, reappointment is limited to once, and the term of employment after reappointment is limited to March 31st, 2033.
  • The appointment will be either
    1. fixed-term tenure track, with a possibility to become tenured with evaluation;
      or
    2. fixed-term, without renewal beyond March 31st, 2033.
The applicant should indicate if they would not consider an appointment with a fixed-term, without renewal or if they have a preference for a fixed term of employment. The final decision will be made based on the selection outcome.

In principle, the University could change the designated place of work, but no reassignment or secondment will be against one's will. (In accordance with Article 4 of the Regulations on the Employment of University of Tokyo Faculty Members).
8. Affiliation
Department of Earth and Planetary Science, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo. Group affiliation will be decided based on the field of expertise of the successful applicant.
9. Content of work duties
In addition to their own research, the successful candidate will teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels and also contribute to administration of the department.
In particular, this position requires a strong commitment to the curriculum design and management of the newly established educational system provided by the Global Standard Science Education Division of Graduate School of Science.
In principle, the University could change or reassign work duties, but not against one's will. (In accordance with Article 4 of the Regulations on the Employment of University of Tokyo Faculty Members).
10. Working hours
Based on the discretionary work system for professional work, working hours are deemed to be 7 hours and 45 minutes per day.
11. Days off
Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays and end-of-year holidays (December 29 to January 3)
12. Paid leave
Annual leave, summer leave, bereavement leave etc.
13. Remuneration
  • The salary will be determined based on the successful candidate's academic and professional qualifications according to the University of Tokyo regulations. The salary is paid monthly with two extra payments in the middle and at the end of the calendar year. There is also a system for annual wage increases.
  • Allowances are available to cover the costs of commuting and contribute towards housing etc. The amounts are calculated according to the University of Tokyo regulations.
14. Insurance
The successful candidate will be automatically enrolled in the insurance scheme provided by the Mutual Aid Association of MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) and employment insurance.

  • A summary of the main research and teaching activities of the applicant (about 1000 words)
  • List of publications and related scientific output, which should be divided into the following 4 types
    • Refereed papers and review articles
    • Non-refereed papers and review articles
    • Books
    • Other relevant material
  • PDF files of up to 5 significant publications
  • Outline of aspirations and plans for research and education after taking office (about 1500 words)
  • Names and contact information for 2 referees who can provide an independent assessment of the candidate.
  • The successful applicant will be made an offer at a level commensurate with their experience and evaluation. Applicants should indicate if they wish to be only considered for a position at either the professor or associate professor level.
