Experimental nuclear structure studies using intermediate-energy ion beams

Current Research

Atomic nuclei are quantum many-body systems composed of protons and neutrons. Among their collective excitations, “giant resonances,” in which these nucleons oscillate coherently, are particularly intriguing phenomena. Our research focuses on exciting giant resonances through nuclear scattering reactions and elucidating their underlying structure.

To investigate resonance states in exotic nuclei with large neutron–proton asymmetry, we use intermediate-energy radioactive ion beams at the RI Beam Factory of RIKEN. Measurements are carried out primarily with the magnetic spectrometer SHARAQ installed by the Center for Nuclear Study. In addition, we study nuclear matrix elements relevant to double beta decay through single- and double-charge-exchange reactions.
