Current Research
I aim to understand how environments that have been shaped and maintained by human activities are changing, and what states they may reach in the future. Natural environments are strongly influenced not only by global warming and natural disturbances, but also by land and resource use driven by social factors such as demographic change and policy. My research seeks to clarify the conditions under which social–ecological systems, consisting of human societies and natural ecosystems, may reach major tipping points, and how human societies can respond to such changes.
