Assistant Professor Faculty Position [Foreigner only] in the Organic Chemistry Division, Department of Chemistry, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo

2 Field of expertise
This appointment is in the Biomolecular Chemistry laboratory in the Organic Chemistry division. Research is in the general area of Chemical Biology, with a specialized focus on development of photoactive molecules, protein engineering, biosensing, organic synthesis, biocompatible chemistry, fluorescence spectroscopy, and cell imaging. The hired Assistant Professor will conduct research and education activities in close collaboration with Prof. Robert E. Campbell.
3 Required Qualifications
A Ph.D. or an equivalent qualification, experience in delivering science education in English, and achievements in scientific research. Proficiency in English language (native speaker or equivalent level).
4 Date of Commencement of Employment
As early as possible after a decision has been made
5 Term of Employment & Renewal of Contract
Five years. However, reappointment shall be limited to one time, and the term of office after reappointment shall not exceed March 31, 2033. Renewal of the contract will be determined by considering all relevant factors including, but not limited to, progress on assigned work, performance, achievements, and budgetary considerations.

7 Place of Work
The Biomolecular Chemistry laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo (7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo). In principle, the University could change the designated place of work, but no reassignment or secondment will be against one's will. (In accordance with Article 4 of the Regulations on the Employment of University of Tokyo Faculty Members).

9 Work Duties
The successful candidate will be expected to work in collaboration with Prof. Robert E. Campbell to undertake world-class research in their area of expertise and teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels (including lectures, tutorials, and mentoring). The successful candidate will also be expected to provide support for the new Global Standard Science Education Division the University of Tokyo’s ongoing efforts to further internationalize its student body and curriculum. In principle, the University could change or reassign work duties, but not against one’s will. (In accordance with Article 4 of the Regulations on the Employment of University of Tokyo Faculty Members).
10 Working Hours
Based on the discretionary work system for professional work, working hours are deemed to be 7 hours and 45 minutes per day, Monday to Friday.
11 Days off
Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays and end-of-year holidays (December 29 to January 3)
12 Paid Leave
Paid leave is available for a variety of reasons (e.g., annual leave, sick leave, special leave, etc.) as described in The University of Tokyo Rules on Working Hours and Leave for Academic and Administrative Staff
13 Wages, etc.
An annual-based salary system. Salary will be decided after taking into account the successful candidate’s academic and professional background, etc.
14 Allowances
Commuting allowance and other allowances decided by the University of Tokyo
15 Insurance
The successful candidate will be automatically enrolled in the insurance scheme provided by the Mutual Aid Association of MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) and employment insurance. This includes health insurance and pension.

  • A summary of the main research and teaching activities of the applicant (about 1000 words each).
  • List of publications and related scientific output, which should be divided into the following four (4) types;
    • Refereed papers and review articles
    • Non-refereed papers and review articles
    • Books
    • Other relevant material
  • PDF files of up to five (5) significant publications
  • Outline of aspirations and plans for research and education after taking office (about 1000 words) including an explanation of how the candidate proposes to work in collaboration with the Biomolecular Chemistry laboratory.
  • Names and contact information for two (2) referees who can provide an independent assessment of the candidate.
