Current Research
I am conducting research on the evaluation and projection of the impact of global environmental change on landforms, ecosystems, and the humanosphere during the Holocene and Anthropocene periods, and on adaptation measures in coastal areas such as coral reefs, through field surveys and spatial information analysis. Based on this knowledge and perspective, I hope to deepen our understanding of the global environment, biosphere, and anthroposphere systems, and contribute to the formation of sustainable societies under global environmental change. (1) Formation and dynamics of the Earth's surface environment during the Holocene. Using environmental indicators such as fossil corals, core drilling and observation of outcrops, I am conducting research on the reconstruction of sea-level change and crustal movement during the Holocene and on the history of landform development. (2) Environmental change impact and adaptation in the Anthropocene. The coastal environment has changed drastically since the Industrial Revolution. We are collecting and organizing data from the past, monitoring to demonstrate the changes, elucidating the mechanisms of change, and predicting the future. As an adaptation measure to these changes, I am studying spatial planning of marine and terrestrial areas for the conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems. (3) Integrated assessment of global environmental, social, and ecological systems. I am designing and constructing an integrated assessment model for the impact of environmental changes brought about by the humanosphere on the global surface environment, including landforms, climate, and biosphere, and the impact of changes in the biosphere on the humanosphere through changes in ecosystem functions and services. Since ecosystem services occur when the distribution of organisms and their functions are recognized by the society, we are developing research that goes into the recognition of society as well as demonstrating changes in the distribution of organisms. (4) Nature-based Solutions. The concept of utilizing the natural environment as infrastructure, Nature-based Solutions, has been becoming increasingly popular. Based on the studies of the global surface environment and systems described in (1)-(3) above, I am examining the possibility of introducing green infrastructure in Japan and maintaining national lands based on the conservation of coral reef ecosystems in island countries.
