FoPM sponsored Berkeley Week at Kavli IPMU, a 4-day workshop that brings together young researchers from UTokyo and the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) on January 14th – 17th, 2020. There were 50 participants in total, including 5 FoPM students, and almost half, including 5 graduate students and 3 postdocs from UC Berkeley, came from overseas.

In the workshop, as part of career training, Prof. Takaaki Kajita, Nobel Laureate in Physics 2015, talked about how research doesn’t always go the way you expect. The American graduate students talked about how and what to prepare for an international postdoc application, and Prof. Hitoshi Murayama, the FoPM Program Coordinator, talked about tips and strategies to succeed in work as a postdoc abroad.

One of the UTokyo students (from China) and two former Kavli IPMU postdocs (from Germany and Italy) talked about “Life in Japan” to deepen cultural understanding among the international attendees, and as a result one of the graduate students from Berkeley expressed an interest in applying for a JSPS fellowship. Many of the participants, including the FoPM students, appreciated the opportunity to hear about career development and cross-cultural experiences.
