Welcome to FoPM! We use state-of-the-art physics and mathematics to train basic science specialists who can also find solutions to real-world problems. Join us to work with world leaders in mathematics and the physical sciences and push through scientific frontiers to transform science and society!

All exceptional students are welcome to apply to FoPM, regardless of their background or nationality. We aim to maximize each student’s individual potential by creating a diverse and inclusive environment that inspires them to interact across traditional boundaries and pursue game-changing research at the forefront of science.

FoPM takes advantage of UTokyo’s two World Premier International (WPI) Research Centers, the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) and the International Research Center for Neurointelligence (IRCN), which have been instrumental in the globalization of research and system reform at UTokyo. Through FoPM, we now aim to build on this success and initiate a similar wide-reaching reform of Japanese graduate-level education at UTokyo and beyond.

FoPM retains the strengths of the Japanese education system—a thorough grounding in fundamental scientific concepts and strong problem-solving skills—while also introducing carefully selected systems—intake diversification, open-door policies, international and interdisciplinary experience—from our partner institutions around the world. Our connections to industry are designed to encourage students to consider how their research could benefit society and inspire them to take on the challenge of solving the problems facing the world today.
