Dr. Anicia Zeberli, who received her Master's degree from the Institute for Chemical and Bioengineering (Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences, ETH Zürich), and completed her Doctoral degree under the supervision of Prof. Hirokazu Sugiyama in the Department of Chemical System Engineering (School of Engineering, UTokyo), took up a position as Manufacturing Engineer in the Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche. Her collaboration with Roche as part of the Strategic Partnership Project during her Doctoral studies gives her a strong basis to work within the pharmaceutical sector.

February 20 - 27
Project Assistant Prof. Sara Badr and Ms. Kozue Okamura, a first-year Master's student, both from the Department of Chemical System Engineering (School of Engineering, UTokyo), visited ETH Zürich and met with Prof. Konrad Hungerbühler, Prof. Gonzalo Guillén Gosálbez, and Dr. Michael Sokolov, all of the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences, and Prof. Volker Hoffmann of the Department of Management, Technology, and Economics to discuss research collaborations and possible student exchanges between the two institutes. Assistant Prof. Badr and Ms. Okamura also visited the pharmaceutical company Roche, and discussed the possibility of research exchanges, including student internships, with UTokyo.
Mid-February [Expanding the partnership: UZH]
Assistant Prof. Yusuke Nasu of the Department of Chemistry (School of Science, UTokyo) visited Prof. Daniel Razansky, of both the Institute for Biomedical Engineering (ETH Zürich) and the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology (UZH) to give a talk on his research and to teach the group how to use the technology required for their collaboration. He also visited Prof. Tommaso Patriarchi in the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology (UZH) and a postdoctoral researcher in Prof. Bruno Weber's research group in the same institute to discuss his research. The meeting with Prof. Weber's group resulted in the start of a new collaboration.

Assistant Prof. Yusuke Nasu and Dr. Mizuki Endo of the Department of Chemistry (School of Science, UTokyo), and Assistant Prof. Jumpei Morimoto from the Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology (School of Engineering, UTokyo) gave a seminar for Prof. Donald Hilvert's research group in the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences (ETH Zürich) while they were in Zürich for the “4th ETH Zürich-The University of Tokyo Strategic Partnership Symposium: Innovations in Chemical Biology”. Assistant Prof. Jumpei Morimoto from the Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology (School of Engineering, UTokyo) also visited Prof. Gisbert Schneider in the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences (ETH Zürich) to discuss their research.

Project Assistant Prof. Ryohei Hisano of the Social ICT Research Center (Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, UTokyo) visited Prof. Didier Sornette of the Chair of Entrepreneurial Risks (Department of Management, Technology and Economics, ETH Zürich) to discuss their collaborative research. They plan to continue their collaboration into the next academic year.

Project Assistant Prof. Ryohei Hisano of the Social ICT Research Center (Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, UTokyo) visited ETH Zürich to discuss research that he is collaborating on with Prof. Didier Sornette of the Chair of Entrepreneurial Risks (Department of Management, Technology and Economics, ETH Zürich).

Dr. Sara Badr, who received her Doctoral degree from ETH Zürich in 2017, was appointed as a project assistant professor in the Hirao-Sugiyama group in the Department of Chemical System Engineering (School of Engineering, UTokyo).

From May
Dr. Naohiro Terasaka, who had been carrying out research under Prof. Donald Hilvert in the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences (ETH Zürich) since 2015, joined Prof. Hiroaki Suga's research group in the Department of Chemistry (School of Science, UTokyo) as a Project Assistant Professor. Assistant Prof. Terasaka and Mr. Yamato Komatsu, a first-year Master's student in Prof. Suga's group, have now started a new collaborative research project with Prof. Hilvert.

Dr. Sara Badr, who received her doctoral degree from the Institute for Chemical and Bioengineering (Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences, ETH Zürich), joined Associate Prof. Hirokazu Sugiyama's research group in the Department of Chemical System Engineering (School of Engineering, UTokyo) as a scientific researcher.

Project Assistant Prof. Ryohei Hisano of the Social ICT Research Center, which is affiliated with the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology (UTokyo), gave a presentation at the “2nd ETH Zürich-The University of Tokyo Strategic Partnership Symposium on Science, Design, Manufacturing, and Innovation” held at ETH Zürich. His participation expanded the scope of the partnership between the two universities to include cutting-edge research in entrepreneurial risks and virtual currencies in the fields of economics and management technology. Prof. Hisano's collaborator at ETH Zürich, Prof. Didier Sornette (Chair of Entrepreneurial Risks, Department of Management, Technology and Economics), gave a plenary lecture at the symposium, and Dr. Spencer Wheatley of the same department also presented his research.

Dr. May Szedlak of the Department of Computer Science (ETH Zürich) visited the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology at UTokyo. She gave a lecture for graduate students titled “Algorithms for Abstract Linear Programming” and a seminar on her specialist field of study, and thus contributed to education and research exchange between the two universities.

Assistant Prof. Hidefumi Hiraishi and Mr. Wataru Inariba, a first-year Master's student, of the Department of Computer Science (Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, UTokyo), and Mr. Nobutaka Shimizu, a first-year Master's student of the Department of Mathematical Informatics (Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, UTokyo), visited the Department of Computer Science (ETH Zürich). They plan to collaborate with young researchers at ETH Zürich on research related to combinatorial optimization.

Dr. Luis Barba, a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zürich, came to Japan to participate in the “ETH Zürich-The University of Tokyo Strategic Partnership Symposium on Science, Design, Manufacturing, and Information.” During his visit, Dr. Barba also gave a lecture on computational geometry at the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology (UTokyo).

Ms. May Szedlák, a doctoral student who also works as a research assistant in the Department of Computer Science (ETH Zürich), visited UTokyo to give an intensive course on combinatorial geometry at the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology.

Dr. Hironori Yoshida, a researcher at the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication at ETH Zürich, visited the group of Prof. Takeo Igarashi in the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology (UTokyo) to carry out collaborative research.

Assistant Prof. Vorapong Suppakitpaisarn and Dr. Sonoko Moriyama, a visiting researcher, both of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology (UTokyo), visited Prof. Bernd Gärtner and Prof. Komei Fukuda of the Institute of Theoretical Computer Science (Department of Computer Science, ETH Zürich).

Dr. Matteo Lucchini, a researcher in Prof. Ursula Keller's group in the Department of Physics (ETH Zürich), was invited to the Department of Chemistry (UTokyo) by Prof. Yamanouchi, Vice Dean of the School of Science. Dr. Lucchini gave two seminars and discussed future collaborations with the Yamanouchi group.

The ETH Zürich-UTokyo “Interactive Workshop on Interactive Geometry” was held by Prof. Takeo Igarashi's research group in the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology (UTokyo). The workshop was attended by Dr. Daniele Panozzo, Dr. Wenzel Jakob, and Dr. Fabrizio Pecem, three young postdoctoral researchers from the Department of Computer Science (ETH Zürich); three visiting researchers from the USA; and Dr. Daisuke Sakamoto, Project Lecturer, and several graduate students from the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology. The participants exchanged ideas through discussions about their research.

Dr. Richard Obexer, who obtained his doctorate under the supervision of Prof. Donald Hilvert, Head of the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences (ETH Zürich), joined the Suga group in the Department of Chemistry (School of Science, UTokyo) under the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellowships for Foreign Researchers program.

Assistant Prof. Yuki Goto of the Department of Chemistry (School of Science, UTokyo) visited ETH Zürich, where he attended the “16th International Symposium on Advancing the Chemical Sciences” (ISACS16), an international conference on chemical biology. While he was there, he gave lectures and initiated collaborative research projects with the research group of Prof. Jeffrey Bode, Head of the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry (Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences).

Dr. Hironori Yoshida, a researcher in the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology (UTokyo) and the Department of Architecture (School of Engineering, UTokyo), was appointed as a researcher at the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication at ETH Zürich.

Dr. Naohiro Terasaka, who obtained his doctorate in March 2015 under the supervision of Prof. Hiroaki Suga in the Department of Chemistry (School of Science, UTokyo), began working as a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zürich. Dr. Terasaka was recruited as a fellow of the international “Human Frontier Science Program” (HFSP).

Dr. Sonoko Moriyama, a visiting researcher in the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology (UTokyo), visited ETH Zürich to carry out collaborative research. At the same time, Dr. Hironori Yoshida visited Prof. Matthias Kohler and Prof. Fabio Gramazio of the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication. They agreed to promote collaborations with Prof. Takeo Igarashi of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology (UTokyo).

Assistant Prof. Toby Passioura of the Department of Chemistry (School of Science, UTokyo) visited Prof. Donald Hilvert, Head of the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences, and Prof. Jeffrey Bode, Head of the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry, both at ETH Zürich, to discuss collaborative research.

Dr. Yibo Wu of the Department of Biology (ETH Zürich) visited UTokyo and gave a seminar for Prof. Shinya Kuroda's research group in the Department of Biological Sciences (School of Science). Dr. Wu and Prof. Kuroda decided to start a collaboration and discussed the possibility of student exchanges.
Mid-February
Dr. Volkher Scholz, a researcher in the Department of Physics (ETH Zürich), visited Prof. Mio Murao of the Department of Physics (School of Science, UTokyo). Dr. Scholz gave three seminars and informed Prof. Murao that there was a Master's student at ETH Zürich who was interested in doing his doctoral studies at UTokyo.
