The Department of Physics and Two Nobel Prizes
The Undergraduate Department of Physics boasts more than 40 faculty members, while the Graduate Department in Physics, including affiliated research institutes and centers, comprises over 130 professors, associate professors, and lecturers. It was here that the groundbreaking neutrino research, which earned Japan two Nobel Prizes, first took shape. More recently, our department has pioneered studies that harness artificial intelligence as a research tool while also exploring AI itself through the lens of physics.
With an unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of discovery, we delve into both fundamental research—investigating the origins of matter and the universe, as well as the fundamental laws and universal principles that govern nature—and applied research, laying the groundwork for materials and devices that drive technological advancement. Within this vast and ever-expanding frontier, students will undoubtedly find research areas that captivate their curiosity.
Students in our undergraduate program undertake a rigorous and comprehensive education, structured through lectures, exercises, and conducting experiments. In their third year, they participate in small-group seminars, and in their fourth year, they join research laboratories, engaging in theoretical exercises and specialized experiments under the guidance of experienced mentors in a one-on-one setting.
Our department is further distinguished by its robust support network, comprising academic advisors, administrative staff, technical personnel, and career counselors, all dedicated to providing attentive and personalized support to every student. Additionally, spaces are available for undergraduates to gather, exchange ideas, and engage in intellectual discussions, fostering a vibrant academic community.
