In a coded-aperture imaging system, a coded aperture mask containing beautiful geometric patterns is mounted above a detector plane. The shaded areas help scientists determine the direction of the light source. This technique is used in artificial satellites to capture high-energy radiation. ©Tomoaki Kasuga
