The University of Tokyo Faculty Position in Ocean Dynamics

The Department of Earth and Planetary Science, Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo invites applications for a position at the level of Assistant Professor in the field of Ocean Dynamics. There will be an evaluation of achievements in both research and education after five years of employment. The University of Tokyo is committed to gender equality in hiring. Note that this position will be registered for the Leading Initiative for Excellent Young Researchers (LEADER) program supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

2. Field of expertise
Ocean Dynamics. In particular, research fields concerned with elucidating the dynamics of oceanic phenomena focused on a physics-based understanding of processes inherent in the phenomena.
3. Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D., an equivalent qualification, or evidence that either will be obtained by March 31, 2021
  • Ability to conduct advanced research in the field of Ocean Dynamics
  • Ability to teach computational and physics-related practical courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Sufficient Japanese ability for instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels (where this is not possible at the time of appointment, this level of language proficiency is expected within five years)

9. Work Duties
In addition to their own research, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the educational programs through instructing students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels by assisting with the supervision of research students and taking charge of practical courses etc.
10. Working Hours
Based on the discretionary work system for professional work, working hours are deemed to be 7 hours and 45 minutes per day.
11. Days off
Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays and end-of-year and new-year holidays (December 29 to January 3)
12. Paid Leave
Annual leave, bereavement leave, etc.
13. Salary
The salary consists of a basic salary and bonuses paid twice a year. The amount for the basic salary is decided based on the successful candidate's academic and professional background, etc. There is also a system for regular salary increases.
14. Allowances
Commuting and other allowances determined following the rules of the University of Tokyo
15. Insurance
The successful candidate will be automatically enrolled in the health insurance and pension schemes provided by the Mutual Aid Association of MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) and will be provided with employment insurance.

  • Names and contact details for 2 referees who can provide independent assessments of the candidate.
