生物は，光を感受しそれに応答することによって地球環境に適応している．また，植物が光をエネルギー源として生み出す有機物や酸素が，我々の生存を支えている．一方生物学研究に目を向けると，光を用いた様々な技術が，原子から個体レベルにいたる多様な階層の研究活動を支えている．光と生物の関係を様々な角度から捉えた最先端の研究について，演習を交えつつ概説する．

Living organisms sense and respond to light in the environment. Organic molecules and oxygen, which are made by photosynthesis of plants, support our life. Light (or photons) is also utilized in a wide variety of research in biological sciences, for multiple layers of life from atoms to bodies. Lectures will be delivered on many topics on the relationship of life and light. Students are requested to submit a short paper (test) at the end of each lecture.
