Current Research
I work on a wide range of topics in quantum information theory with students and collaborators. Currently one of the topics I am most interested in is the problem of quantum estimation, which is the act of writing down a mathematical description of quantum systems given experimental data. It can be viewed as the process of converting quantum information, via measurements, into classical information. Thus there are several aspects to the problem, from the theoretical models of the quantum systems under study to the design of experiments and processing of data. I am studying the former aspect, where assuming different symmetries of the quantum system can lead to different estimates, and therefore it is important to clarify when such assumptions are appropriate. Specifically I am considering multiphoton state estimation in quantum optics, where degrees of freedom that are not measured in experiments ("hidden") can affect the symmetry of the states involved.
