Study on Mechanism of Earthquake Generation from Aspects of Material Science
Current Research
Earthquakes are generated by repeated destruction of fault surface. What is the reason for the repeated destruction of deep underground fault surface? Faults are made from not only fault surface, but fault fracture zone of under 100 m width surrounding fault surface. Dynamic, static, and physicochemical processes of the materials in the fault fracture zone are believed to occur according to the elementary step of earthquake generation. Our group aims to understand the elementary step of earthquake generation by outdoor activities and experiments.
