The Students and Researchers Exchange Program in Sciences (STEPS) is an academic exchange program which started in October 2014 and is scheduled for four and a half years. It is one of the programs adopted by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science under its Re-Inventing Japan Project. Under this Program, the School of Science and Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, promote researcher and student exchanges with Lomonosov Moscow State University and Saint Petersburg State University. The Program is aimed at facilitating academic exchange between the University of Tokyo and the two Russian universities in the fields of basic science and civil engineering as well as related fields, thereby building a foundation for collaboration in education and research in the future. It supports student exchanges between the University of Tokyo and the two Russian universities, with a view to fostering personnel capable of contributing to cooperation between Japan and Russia in the academic and industrial worlds. I hope that students from the School of Science and Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, will utilize the Program to broaden their global perspective and in the future not only contribute to Japan-Russia relations but also play a leading role in the international arena.
