[Event Report] GSC Promotion in India

From December 6-10, 2016, faculty members and staff from the University of Tokyo visited seven institutions in Western India. Their delegation consisted of GSC Program Coordinator, Prof. Yamanouchi, Prof. Mitsuhiko Shionoya, Department of Chemistry, Prof. Takeo Kato, Institute for Solid State Physics, Prof. Masahiro Teshima, Institute for Cosmic Ray Research, and staff from the School of Science.

In Mumbai they visited Jai Hind College and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. In Pune they visited five universities: Abasaheb Garware College, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune, Fergusson College, Sir Parashurambhau College, and Savitribai Phule Pune University.

The UTokyo delegation received a warm welcome from each institution, where they learnt of the current research-based and international activities taking place. At the universities, the delegation also had the pleasure of meeting many bright undergraduate and postgraduate students to whom they introduced a range of opportunities for international students in the School of Science. This included presentations promoting the Global Science Course (GSC), the Global Science Graduate Course (GSGC), the University of Tokyo Research Internship Program (UTRIP), and research activities in the Department of Physics.

Having engaged in fruitful discussions with members of these institutions, we are looking forward to further collaborations. In particular, we sincerely hope that many of the students we met feel encouraged to apply to our programs and join our School in the future.
